The earliest copy of the book of John in Greek uses the word tetelestai in Jesus' phrase, “It is finished,” which stems from the verb teleo. Translated to English, teleo means, "to complete, to pay in full, to accomplish in entirety". It's a very precise word that signifies the prevailing end to a particular course of action. Think, "mission accomplished!" But wait, there's more. Tetelestai is "perfect tense" in Greek, which implies completion, not only in the past, but a continued, persistent completion in the present and on into the future. Think, "Mission before, now, and forever accomplished!" But what was it that was finished? Not only was Jesus’ mission as a man coming to a close, so was His physical punishment and abuse, as well as His separation from The Father due to the sin He bore, the old covenant with it’s continued sacrifice and short term atonement, and not least of all, Satan’s attempt at thwarting God’s plan to reconcile humanity to Him was finished. But paramount at that moment was the matter of death, the penalty for sin in the cause of our just and righteous Father, was settled eternally in Jesus’ final breath. His substitutionary sacrifice for our sin has no expiration date, was paid in full, is paid in full, willbe paid in full, but is already paid in full, erased from the books, deleted from the file, never to be undone and never to be owed again. Sin's grip released. Eternal punishment averted. Death conquered and fallen humanity redeemed. Finished!
