Jesus told His followers that He would be put to death and would rise again three days later, but the gospels illustrate the confusion and panic they felt when His tomb was found to be empty. Enter angels! That’s right, there was an angelic presence at Jesus’ tomb that day. The message from the angel according to Matthew's gospel was that giant stone rolling is like no big deal, and much, much more importantly: Jesus, the lowly, crucified-unto-death Nazarene had risen from the dead and walked right outta that grave! Jesus' literal, physical resurrection not only fulfilled prophecy, but confirmed His deity and authority, and is therefore, essential to our faith. Paul highlights the importance of the resurrection when he advises the church at Corinth, "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins... we are to be pitied more than all men" (1 Cor. 15:17-19.) But make no mistake… Jesus IS risen!
