Paul wrote letters to handful churches while imprisoned; Colosse being one of those churches. He delivers a familiar message to a church being polluted by heresy. Paul urges the Colossians to embrace the Jesus to whom they were originally introduced, and through whom all sin is forgiven. (Col 1:13-14, 22-23) He has heard about various acts some are pursuing and requiring in the name of worship and he is forced to address a seemingly crazy list of "DON'T's" including: self-harm, food restrictions angel worship, astrology, spells, pacifying moody spirits, as well as immorality, greed, rage, slander, foul language, and buying into "empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense" (Col 2:8, 2:18-23, 3:5-9). Wow. He follows up with a healthy list of "DO's": be kind and forgiving, humble and gentle, patient, loving and in unity with the church, worshiping, holding each other accountable and being ever thankful and grateful to God. (Col 3:12-17) The uncomplicated big picture Paul presents to the Colossians and to us today can be summed as: Place your faith in Jesus and put His kingdom first, or "Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things."
