From the time God led Moses and Israel out of Egypt, across a forty-year span in the desert, and on into Canaan, He routinely cautions them about idolatry and the worship of foreign gods. Over another 50 years led by Joshua in Canaan, God forbids His people to intermarry with foreigners and He routinely directs them to drive out every last survivor of the lands they conquer. If allowed to stay, He forewarns that these survivors will eventually ensnare Israel with idols and detestable pagan customs. Just before his death, Joshua gathers the Israelites and leads them in renewing their covenant with God and he highlights what he sees as disaster assured. Israel has consistently allowed foreigners to remain in the land, ignoring God's stern and repeated warnings not to do so. In his final admonition, Joshua charges the people to decide that very day. If serving God is too burdensome or a false pagan god is preferred, then serve a counterfeit. However, with his influence as their leader those many years, he made it known: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." This verse is a decor staple in Christian homes from here to heaven!
