In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus compared His followers to "the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world" in order to highlight characteristics He wants us to demonstrate, (Matt 5:13-14). Salt is a preservative that delays spoiling and decomposition. In this verse salt represents love, faith, kindness, generosity, integrity and morality, all of which are a result of obedience to God. These godly virtues preserve society, delaying its inevitable corruption. However, Jesus warned that salt can lose its intrinsic value, it's saltiness, which renders salt, "good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled by men." (Matt 5:13). Continuing on, Jesus speaks of light, which obviously illuminates. As darkness cannot exist in the presence of light, neither can secrecy, deceit, depravity and all manner of evil exist when exposed by the light. In this same verse, a metaphor, stating, "a city on a hill cannot be hidden". The good deeds born out of love for and obedience to Jesus, deeds such as serving one another, speaking truth and goodness, feeding and clothing those in need, giving money, time, love, compassion, encouragement, prayer... Certainly NOT works done for accolades or selfish ambition, but selfless, genuinely inspired, good deeds by God's obedient people with pure motives- the brilliantly shining hillside city that can't be hidden. The desired result: praise and glory to God! The good stuff!
